ICL launches WebFOCUS Two-Way E-mail

Johannesburg, 28 Jan 2003

Information Builders` WebFOCUS Two-Way E-mail is a groundbreaking interactive approach to wireless real-time information delivery. It gives users, both wired and wireless, the ability to communicate flexibly with enterprise information systems.

ICL integration and business intelligence marketing communications manager Tony Cross says it is based on e-mail and powered by Information Builders` WebFOCUS business intelligence technology.

"Two-Way E-mail makes two-way communication between people and systems possible by not only `pushing` critical information to managers, employees, partners and customers, but also allowing them to `pull` any data from enterprise systems via e-mail," explained Cross.

This approach enables organisations to provide cost-effective, reliable and secure access to existing enterprise information sources through any handheld device - including BlackBerry, Palm, two-way pagers, Pocket PCs and cellphones - without having to build custom interfaces or change existing communication infrastructure.

Two-Way E-mail provides a pre-built structure to manage user access and security with logons and passwords. This gives administrators the ability to create work groups for access to content and secure content based on user qualifications - a real benefit when managing applications for large organisations and numbers of users.

Cross said it can also turn any pre-existing Web information delivery application into a mobile one, with no changes to the application. "This capability, called Self-Service Two-Way E-mail, allows users to deliver mobile applications to other anonymous or unidentified users, using the same interface as the existing corporate intranet or extranet. As a result, a large population of users can seamlessly access information on demand via a commonly used medium," he explained. How it works

a.       Users can initiate queries on demand, or in response to e-mail alerts, which can be either scheduled or event-driven.

b.       The user receives - by e-mail - information request templates.

c.       On receiving an alert or a scheduled report, the user replies back with one of those e-mail templates requesting additional details.

d.       Appropriate responses are sent back as e-mail messages.

Two-Way E-mail information delivery is guaranteed, even if the connection fails, because it is based on messaging technology. It can bring sophisticated reporting to wireless business intelligence, as well as native access to any corporate data source - even ERP, legacy and transactional data.

Two-Way E-mail information delivery is not limited to a wireless environment. It can be applied as a solution for networked staff working from desktop PCs. Those same people could also use it if they decide to go mobile.
