ICL SA rings the changes at Telkom with web-based billing information system

Johannesburg, 06 Apr 1999

IT services company, ICL South Africa, has ensured that access to detailed billing information is made easier with the transformation of Telkom`s client server application, COLD (Computer Output to Lazer Disc), into a sophisticated Web-based system.

The system, to be rolled out to all Telkom outlets countrywide during April, allows for automatic software downloading, easier software distribution, and administration and monitoring of the system from a single point rather than per region - as was past practice. ICL SA account manager, Louw Pieters, foresees the new web-based COLD resulting in a considerable reduction of Total Cost of Ownership for Telkom.

According to Pieters, COLD is an archival system that allows detailed billing information to be accessed for complex customer queries within seconds. "In the past, it took several days to access information on micro-film. However, as technology evolved, complex customer queries could be dealt with overnight and now, with the transformation of COLD into a Web-based system, the information is literally at our fingertips," he says.

The man-in-the-street will also benefit from Telkom`s new Web-based system and its capacity to handle multiple billing queries. A customer can now make billing enquiries spanning several months, with operators able to pull up the relevant bills within a matter of seconds.
