Identity management: Sun determined to take lead in growing $4bn market

Johannesburg, 17 Jun 2004

In its bid to lead the lucrative identity management market with its current estimated value of $4 billion, Sun Microsystems has announced a comprehensive set of products and alliances that enable it to provide complete and cost-effective solutions to businesses seeking more secure operating environments.

The new Sun identity management product line is open, modular and integration-friendly, drawing heavily on its portable, platform-independent Java technology, says Lodewyk de Beer, solutions architect at Sun Microsystems SA. The identity management product line includes the Java System Identity Manager, the Java System Access Manager and the Java System Directory Server Enterprise Edition.

Sun has also established relationships with leading consulting firms Deloitte & Touche LLP and PricewaterhouseCoopers to support the deployment of its identity management products.

"Effective identity management is the single most important enabler of the networked economy and arguably one of the largest market opportunities," notes De Beer.

"Particularly in the light of new fiscal regulations and security initiatives, IT investments are being directed as the foundation of compliance, safety and good governance. There's growing value in having authenticated users and customers, which is defining new market opportunities for those with the infrastructure to provide these solutions," he adds.

Java System Identity Manager, Java System Access Manager and Java System Directory Server Enterprise Edition combine Sun's technology expertise with software acquired from Waveset Technologies.

Java System Identity Manager securely manages both identity permissions and profiles, while also providing synchronisation services for identities across the enterprise. The Java System Access Manager is designed to help organisations manage secure access to both internal and external Web-based resources.

The Java System Directory Server Enterprise Edition - a central repository for storing enterprise identity information - delivers enterprise-level services such as fail-over, load-balancing, security and integration with Microsoft Active Directory.
