iForce delivers enterprise-strength power to SME businesses

Johannesburg, 27 Aug 2002

Sun Microsystems and Sybase are bringing highly scalable, enterprise-strength data processing power to small and mid-market businesses with the iForce solution for Economical Data Management.

Sun's iForce channel partners provide enterprise-strength data management, analytical ability and disaster recovery functionality at PC server prices to businesses that previously may not have been able to afford such a solution.

The combination of SunFire servers and Sybase software has been pre-tested and integrated to help customers reduce risk and speed time to implementation, in order to more quickly realise a return on IT investment.

"It's common knowledge that the SME market is overtaking the enterprise industry, but unlike large corporations, these organisations often do not have the necessary IT infrastructure and skills to manage their systems," says Daryl Blundell, solutions sales manager at Sun Microsystems SA.

"A cost-competitive solution such as iForce is therefore a huge benefit for SMEs, as an integrated stack with all IT components is bundled together to create a specific solution," says Blundell.

Echoing Blundell's statement, Dean Oliver, CEO of NEXL, a US IT consulting firm says iForce offers a "good-to-go and good-to-grow" solution for small and mid-market firms.

"When measured against competing solutions, it offers both a lower entry point and unlimited scalability for firms seeking to manage data for maximum profitability and efficiency."

The Sun and Sybase initiative has created a solution that packs an extraordinary amount of data processing and analytical power into a small footprint, representing a realistic investment for small and mid-sized businesses. Sybase's tight architectural integration with Sun technology provides an assurance that the technology foundation can, and does, scale to meet growing needs.

Blundell says there is an overwhelming need among SMEs to convert internal data stores into revenue opportunities that are not limited to large enterprises.

"Until now, the required processing and analytical power has been well beyond the reach of many organisations, but bringing the iForce Solution for Economical Data Management into the channel addresses that very opportunity."

The iForce Solution for Economical Data Management is based on Sybase's Adaptive Server IQ Multiplex enterprise analytical engine and Sun Fire V880 and V480 server platforms. Sun's new generation of four and eight-CPU Sun Fire servers are designed to support highly scalable, business-critical applications at PC prices.

Enterprise server processing power is delivered through this combination of Sybase's data compression and smart indexing technologies and Sun's latest Sun Fire servers, which are powered by 64-bit 900MHz UltraSPARC III processors, Sun Fire Plane Interconnect technology, and expanded memory capacity.
