Improving the performance of AS/400 continuous availability

Johannesburg, 12 Jun 2000

Local enterprise software specialist and distributor of DataMirror products in southern Africa, Dax , has announced a new technology that optimises the flow of data into and out of a high-speed software cache, thereby enabling near zero latency for system and .

Jeremy Matthews, MD of Dax Data, says that in performance testing conducted at IBM`s AS/400 development laboratory in Rochester, Minnesota, a single instance of XtremeCache moved data from a primary system to the backup system`s cache at 90 million transactions per hour. The data was then applied to the backup system faster than 60 million transactions per hour.

"When configured in multiple high availability instances, XtremeCache managed to achieve rates of over 200 million applied transactions per hour in the IBM Rochester Lab," he adds. "DataMirror reports that it has yet to find the maximum throughput capacity of XtremeCache, but it expects that these results are nowhere near the maximum performance potential."

Matthews says the greatest difficulty encountered during testing was in creating the enormous volumes of data required.

From a business point of view he says DataMirror`s caching technology means that AS/400 applications and data are not only continuously available, but the performance enhancements it provides make those applications truly scalable - a must in an increasingly Internet driven world where volumes can triple overnight.

"Even companies with extremely high transaction volumes can rely on it solutions to keep ERP, e-Business, banking and financial applications running 24 hours a day and 365 days a year," says Matthews.
