Increased awareness key to ensuring card security

By Fleishman Hillard
Johannesburg, 10 Nov 2003

Statistically, credit and debit card fraud is highest across the industry in the month of November, and in an effort to curb a rise in card fraud this year, First National Bank (FNB) has introduced a 'Card Security Week` running from 10 to 16 November 2003.

Despite recent identification fraud occurrences, many consumers still fail to take the necessary precautions to protect their credit and debit cards as well as their personal identification numbers (PINs). The campaign aims to highlight the measures that consumers can take to protect their finances.

FNB`s Card Security Week will complement the multi-layered fraud prevention initiative already in place between the banking and retail industry, together with a dedicated card fraud prevention police unit which is working to disrupt illegal banking activities.

Research by this initiative has shown that card fraud is often perpetrated by organised crime gangs in order to fund other serious crimes such as drug dealing and hijacking syndicates. Yet much of the crime can be easily avoided by greater awareness from the public.
