Incremental Java

Sun Microsystems co-CTO Robert Brewin has confirmed the open-sourcing of the Java programming language will be done in incremental steps, with some pieces available by next June.

Computerworld says Brewin cited the magnitude of the processes involved in offering Java via open source as the reason for the phased approach, but has given no time table for the process.

Some components of Java that could be open-sourced in an incremental fashion include the Java virtual machine, the runtime environment, the Web services stack and the Swing GUI components.

Java update for Mac OS X

Apple Computer has released a Java update to improve reliability and compatibility of Java 2 Standard Edition 5.0 with its Mac OS X operating system.

PC Welt says the J2SE 5.0 update is available as a download from Apple`s Web site or through the update facility in Mac OS X.

The update becomes the preferred Java version, superseding Java 1.4.2, but Apple notes that applications will run with J2SE 5.0 unless they specifically request Java 1.4.2

New framework for Java thin-clients

Icesoft Technologies has released an integrated AJAX (asynchronous JavaScript and XML) framework for Java Enterprise Edition, reports InfoWorld.

The report says Icefaces Enterprise Edition v1.0 extends JavaServer Faces to enable Java developers to build thin-client rich Web applications.

Icesoft says developers can develop thin-client Java applications, but eliminate the proliferation of JavaScript code. Icefaces supports AJAX technology, which allows presentation changes to be pushed directly from the server to the client.
