Incubation workshop to explore potential commercial gain for tertiary institutes

Flagship business and technology incubator seeks input from interested parties to further innovative programme for university-based incubation
Johannesburg, 07 Sep 2006

Recently merged business and technology incubator, SoftstartBTI, has announced plans to host the second Annual Tertiary Education Satellite Incubation Programme (TESIP) Workshop on 3 October.

Taking place at the Tshwane University of Technology, the focus of the workshop will be on highlighting the benefits of incubation and the harnessing of technological innovation for commercial gain at tertiary institutions.

"We are delighted to be hosting this important event for the second time," affirms Leonie Greyling, Projects Manager and TESIP coordinator for the Midrand-based incubator. "We hope to build on the excellent introductory foundation laid last year and use this year's event to bring the various stakeholders together to forge an action plan for the development and implementation of TESIP nationally."

Supported by the SEDA Technology Programme, SoftstartBTI has issued a call for anyone interested to contact the incubator and pre-register for the one-day event.

"We are looking for representatives from the tertiary institutions themselves, the incubation community and the private and public sector," confirms Greyling, "and keen to involve stakeholders who may have a role to play in developing an action plan for the advancement of satellite incubation."

The TESIP Workshop will run in parallel with the fourth International Conference on Entrepreneurship and Innovation at the Tshwane University of Technology and will use the opportunity to set up an advisory body to oversee the establishment, evaluation and monitoring of university-based incubation programmes.

"Although we will be highlighting the benefits of incubation by presenting successful case studies and the like, the focus this year is very much on practical action," maintains Greyling, "and the advisory panel is seen as a critical next step to take things forward."
