Independent study shows OpenEdge Studio boosts development

Johannesburg, 22 Sep 2004

An independent study by Infostructure, an affiliate of the independent IT industry analyst firm Valley View Ventures, has found Progress OpenEdge Studio to be more effective than all other development solutions for small and medium businesses, and for larger organisations developing and deploying mission-critical business applications.

According to the qualitative findings of this study, users report that OpenEdge has much lower total cost of ownership (TCO) and higher return on investment (ROI) when compared to development tools such as those offered by Microsoft for the C# programming language.

"Our OpenEdge 10 release is yet another product that provides the high ROI and low TCO which we are well known for," says Rick Parry, MD of Progress SA.

"OpenEdge increases the ease of developing and deploying new generations of -oriented architected (SOA) business applications."

The Infostructure study reveals that there are significant deployment cost savings for end-users of applications that have been built on Progress OpenEdge, especially when compared to Microsoft, IBM and Oracle, Parry says.

It also identifies several key value-adds of the Progress development solution, including speed-to-deliver, development cost savings, improvements in software quality, application scalability, and platform and system upgrade flexibility. It cites these benefits as the primary reasons for the outstanding TCO and ROI achieved by using OpenEdge Studio.

"These latest findings accord well with our previous findings on the value of higher level development platforms with strong support for specific industries and types of user," says Wayne Kernochan, president of Infostructure. "Over the last six years, the outstanding nature of the development toolset from Progress has been consistently mentioned by OpenEdge users. The value achieved with a good development solution is steadily increasing because of the growing focus organisations are placing on speed to market."

The study cites specific Progress users which have drastically reduced TCO and time to market with OpenEdge Studio. NeoSynergy, an e-commerce systems provider to the automotive industry, developed its specific application using the Progress OpenEdge Studio in under two years at a cost of $2 million.

Infostructure estimates that, had the company chosen Microsoft Visual Basic .NET, the estimated development time would have been three years at a cost of $10 million.

The benefits of using Progress OpenEdge Studio in NeoSynergy`s case included lower development, upgrade, and administrative costs with a 53% ROI improvement; improvements in larger scale and mass deployment architectures; improvements in the application development process; and increased speed to market.

"Progress strives to empower its application partners and customers with the most comprehensive platform for developing reliable business solutions that include highly flexible, SOA-compliant applications ready to integrate with other applications and platforms in an organisation," Parry concludes.
