India and China will play a major role in shaping convergence, a much-hyped concept that is nevertheless proving to be a big opportunity and challenge for the global electronics industry, says EE Times.

According to Krishna Rangasayee, senior director, vertical markets and partnerships at Xilinx, digital convergence promises to reshape the entire electronics industry.

The shift will be characterised by lower power consumption, higher processing capacity, greater functionality, interoperability and access to information from myriad sources, along with the rapid introduction of new products, Rangasayee predicted.

Nokia invests $38m

Near field communication (NFC) chipset designer Inside Contactless has received a 25 million euro ($38 million) investment from the venture arm of Nokia, indicating the importance that the world`s largest handset designer attaches to the future market of m-commerce, reports CBR Online.

NFC, which enables the set-up of wireless communications between devices a few centimetres apart, will be a key element in the eventual convergence of payment cards with mobile phones.

France-based Inside said that so far this year it has delivered 35 million of its MicroPass intelligent payment platforms for the US contactless payments market.

Convergence in a capsule

Yotel, a capsule hotel inside Heathrow Airport`s Terminal 4, is using a converged with two different digital subscriber lines to run all business applications, says Computer Weekly.

Each capsule has free WiFi and wired workstations, digital television and a "techno wall" entertainment system. The network technology was supplied by TFM Networks.

"The multi-application network ensures we have the availability and bandwidth to handle and prioritise operations," said Nigel Buchanan, operations director at Yotel.
