Industrial action at Maritime Radio Services has ended

Johannesburg, 01 Jun 2007

Strike action by 35 Solidarity members at Telkom's Maritime Radio Services in Cape Town ended on Monday evening.

A shift roster based on an hours of work policy, agreed to by representatives of all shift workers at Telkom in 2002, was a main reason behind the industrial action that started at Cape Radio on 24 May 2007.

"As far as the Cape Maritime Radio Services employees were concerned, further staff recruitment and training was necessary before implementation became possible," said Meshack Dlamini, Telkom's Executive for Employee Relations.

Negotiations with employees at the Maritime Radio Services commenced in May last year, where employees were afforded the opportunity to make their inputs relating to the Hours of Work policy. When implementation began in October 2006, Solidarity declared a dispute with Telkom, culminating in the recent strike action.

"There is a task-team made up of all trade unions and management that is in the process of finalising the hours of oork policy," said Dlamini.
