Facebook activity has become increasingly embedded in many users' everyday lives.
The world's largest social network also attracts the most daily activity compared to other social networking services. So what is everyone doing with all that time spent on Facebook?
JESS3, a creative interactive agency specialising in social media and data visualisation, has created a new infographic that depicts “The average day on Facebook”.
Based on the findings of a study published by the Pew Institute earlier this year, titled “Social networking and our lives”, the infographic charts the friendships and activities of Facebook users.
According to the study, 52% of Facebook users and 33% of Twitter users engage with the platform daily, while only 7% of MySpace and 6% of LinkedIn users do the same.
Another key finding was that Facebook is widely used to “revive dormant relationships”. While the average Facebook user has about 229 Facebook friends, 22% of those friends are from high school.
A further 12% are extended family, 10% are co-workers and 9% are college friends. Also, despite the common perception, just 3% of Facebook friends are people users have never met in person, while 7% are people the user has met just once.
More than half of Facebook users (56%) update their status once a week, while 16% never post status updates.
Twenty-two percent of users also comment on other users' updates once a day, while 53% do the same once a week. A further 26% of users “like” content on Facebook daily.
