According to HR and recruitment specialists, the more informed jobseekers are about the market and about available opportunities, the better.
For Teryl Schroenn, CEO of Accsys, while there are initiatives in place to guide and offer advice, not all learners or academic institutions are adequately aware of the opportunities that exist.
While Schroenn acknowledges that academic institutions run open days to inform learners of the possibilities that exist when they leave school, more often than not, it is the learners from affluent institutions who are exposed to the most choices.
"There are efforts to provide learners with access to information and choices, but those from less affluent schools or who do not have exposure to the broader formal business market may not be aware of what is actually available," Schroenn explains.
Accsys' established recruitment division - Accsys PeoplePlace - is run by qualified professionals and is Africa's first and only online National Qualification in Payroll Administration Services, says Schroenn.
Although proximity has a great deal to do with career choice, there is a lot more that can, and should, be done, to empower work entrants, she stresses.
Using payroll as an example, Schroenn explains that there was a time when payroll was not considered a viable career prospect because of a lack of formal qualification and because it was an area of business management not necessarily covered by academic institutions. This has changed, notes Schroenn, questioning if youngsters who are formulating their career plans actually know this.
