Database vendor Informix has upgraded its Java-based SQL database, Cloudscape. The new version supports mobile devices running Microsoft Windows CE and Pocket PC environments.
Cloudscape 3.5 consists of the Cloudscape database management system (DBMS), Cloudsync for data and application synchronisation, and Cloudconnector, a server framework for Internet connections to the Cloudscape DBMS. Optimised to work with Java applications, it can be embedded in single or multi-user applications as a local data manager and provides the advantages of the Java environment.
Cloudscape is a 100% Pure Java SQL database management system, designed for embedding in client or server applications as a local data manager. It implements SQL-92 with extensions for Java that enable the developer to create a column of type Java class, and to write stored procedures in Java for execution inside the DBMS. Cloudscape delivers Java object support within the DBMS itself.
The new version supports mobile devices running Microsoft Windows CE and Pocket PC environments. When combined with Cloudsync, customers can distribute their e-business applications, making them more accessible and adaptable to the demands of mobile workers.
Cloudscape also comes with Cloudview, a database schema development tool and browser. It provides a GUI that enables creation, modification and examination of all database-managed objects.
"Cloudscape 3.5 is a compelling solution for customers and partners building next-generation Web-based applications that scale from the smallest devices to enterprise-class systems," says Julian Field, Cloudscape product manager at Informix SA.
"The application enables mobile users to connect to their corporate network once, download their data and applications to a mobile device, and use the system offline throughout the day, synchronising the device and corporate database when the next connection is made."
