Software vendor Informix has announced details of its split-off of its application software division.
The division will leave Informix Software, which will focus on database products, and a second unnamed company that will deliver application business solutions to market.
The company has committed its new facet - temporarily slugged NewCo within Informix until an official name is announced by year-end - to delivering database- and platform-independent solutions.
Products will include Informix`s current Media360 digital content management solution as well as Axielle, an enterprise portal service. The business intelligence (BI) range of products - i.Decide - will also join the new company`s stables.
Informix Software will continue to deliver Informix`s database solutions, including relational database (RDBMS) and object relational database management systems (ORDBMS). Like the solutions company, Informix wants to make its database more application-independent.
To complement its database business, Informix has launched its "Arrowhead" program, which is designed to rationalise its vertically-fragmented database code, as well as create a single development tool stack for the database product. The new DBMS is expected to include parts from the Extended Parallel Server high-performance transaction engine, the RedBrick decision support database, and the Informix Dynamic Server.
Both divisions of the company hope to benefit from what it predicts to be the next wave in IT - post-PC devices created by the convergence of broadband, cellular and personal digital assistant technologies. It already has mobile and embedded offerings in its Cloudscape 100% Java database and the UniVerse/UniData databases.
James Foy will be president of Informix Software internationally. Simon Jeggo, previously GM of Ardent Software Africa, will replace current GM, Dereck Daymond, who has been appointed to the position of regional director Asia Pacific, Middle East and Africa for Informix Business Solutions. Julian Field has been appointed to the position of GM, Informix Business Solutions, Southern Africa.
