Business Connexion and Indian group Infosys Technologies, which formalised a partnership in April, are exploring a "promising" opportunity in Malawi.
The alliance involves Business Connexion, formerly Comparex, marketing Finacle, an Infosys universal banking solution, in southern Africa. Finacle has customers in 27 countries.
Business Connexion will market the product in SA, Namibia, Swaziland, Mozambique, Lesotho and Malawi.
The partnership is targeting banks to offer solutions in core banking, e-banking, Web-based cash management, treasury, trade finance and alerts. Business Connexion will also provide post-sales support for Finacle customers in the region.
Business Connexion group executive John Lagaay describes Finacle as an end-to-end banking solution. "Although it is probably unlikely that banks in SA will implement the full end-to-end solution, it addresses all sorts of point solutions and is very strong on the e-banking side," he says.
"With anything new, we are still building interest at this stage, and we are also sending people for training. But we are looking at a promising opportunity in Malawi."
"Banks the world over are today saddled with legacy systems that are expensive to maintain and act as a drag on their business agility," says Merwin Fernandes, VP and global head of sales and marketing for Infosys`s banking business unit.
"Legacy replacement has emerged as a prerequisite - a challenge and an opportunity."
He says Infosys views SA as a strategic market in this space. "We are excited about this opportunity and truly believe that together with Business Connexion we can make a difference to the banks in the region."
Listed on the Nasdaq and based in Bangalore, India, Infosys Technologies employs 25 000 people.
