Leading mobile solutions provider, Integrat Mobile, recently launched its Green Connections campaign, encouraging providers, marketers as well as users of mobile phones and mobile technologies to celebrate the environmentally-friendly nature of the mobile industry - and to give back to our environment by planting trees where they are needed most.
To kick off the campaign, and in conjunction with Willow Feather Farms, Integrat Mobile did a simple yet beautiful thing - donating 50 x 2m trees to the Sinqobile Primary School in Soshanguve, on Monday 18 March 2013.
The school is home to 1 200 students between grades R-7, and against all odds, can easily be described as a truly and proudly South African success story. The team is still trying to work out who walked away from the experience richer...
Welcomed by an energetic and talented drum majorette squad, staff members from Integrat Mobile and Willow Feather Farms were led through a crowd of cheering scholars and were soon seated at tables in front of a makeshift stage, where kids of all ages sang, danced, read, acted and recited for the group.
Much time was dedicated to telling their now very attentive audience about the wonders and benefits of trees in their barren environments (videos available on request). Says Willow Feather Farm's Barry Geyer: "Thanks to a variety of corporate sponsors, we are often planting trees in the most desperate of South African schools - but we have seldom seen a reception like this one. I am moved."
Nel agrees: "When we launched Green Connections, we knew that we were onto something great, and that we were opening up a can of potential joy, but I never expected this kind of reception. I am so looking forward to sharing the power of making Green Connections with more clients, other mobile service providers - and even just mobile users who recognise the need for affecting change."
Trees were planted along the borders of an arid sports field, as well as along the edges of the Grade R prefab classrooms - in desperate need of shade. Said headmaster Mr Mandzini; "We can't wait for the trees to grow big! By the time our next athletic season comes along, our learners will be able to participate in their activities without being over-exposed to the hot summer sun!"
Integrat Mobile is well on its way to planting its next 50 trees, with 25 trees already in the virtual 'tree bank'. Also, Nu Metro has granted its permission for the live screening of the movie with a similar message, The Lorax, and the next planting... proving that Green Connections - connecting the 'green' mobile industry with the youth of SA - is a cause worth celebrating.
