Intel backs 32nm processors

Intel is betting on its next-generation 32-nanometer processors to take the company beyond its core PC business, as people look to carry the with them on smartphones and other mobile gadgets, writes InformationWeek.

Intel executives on Wednesday discussed the company's future markets at Intel's Mid-Summer Technology Summit in San Francisco. In describing Intel's strategy, executives said processors and system-on-chip products built with Intel's 32nm process will mark a milestone for the company.

Where current 45nm products are mostly used in PCs, servers and a relatively new category of inexpensive mini-laptops called netbooks, the upcoming 32nm technology will mark the beginning of Intel's reach into smaller consumer electronics that represent much larger markets than PCs.

Design methodology boosts turnaround time

Freescale Semiconductor has successfully taped out a 45-nanometer networking design using Cadence Design Solutions' 'correct-by-design' prevention, analysis, implementation and signoff solution, states TMCnet.

This design methodology demonstrated faster turnaround time compared to traditional design for manufacturing solutions, officials said.

The methodology was used to tape out the design to Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing to support that company's vision to accurately model manufacturing efforts and address them during the design phase.

Interactive 3D available in Excel

Lattice Technology, developers of digital manufacturing applications using the XVL format, have released Version 3.0 of Lattice3D Reporter, an application for delivering interactive 3D data in Excel spreadsheets, reports ThomasNet Industrial News Room.

Lattice3D Reporter delivers interactive 3D product design data in Excel spreadsheets that also contain list data such as work instructions, assembly processes, parts lists, and other manufacturing data.

Users can enhance their work performance and productivity by exploiting the interactivity of the data - click on a listed part and the related 3D part will be displayed where it can be viewed, rotated, cross-sectioned, and measured.
