Intel, Fujitsu Siemens announce quad-core

Fujitsu Siemens has unveiled five Primergy server models that support Intel's three new Xeon quad-core processors.

Both announcements were made at this week's Fujitsu Siemens VisIT Forum 2006 in Augsburg, Germany.

"The Xeon 5300 65 nanometre quad-core processors have doubled performance per Watt, compared with the latest generation of Intel dual-core processors," said Jens-Peter Seik, VP, enterprise business and sales at Fujitsu Siemens.

He said this would lead to direct cost savings for centres because it enabled double the computing power for the same energy consumption in the same amount of floor space.

Intel's regional marketing VP Christian Morales said the new Xeon quad-core chips were immediately available. "Intel plans to ship more than a million units in the next nine months, so that most high-end dual-core servers can be upgraded to quad-core as soon as possible," he said.

Morales emphasised that improved performance per Watt was one of the key areas of work involved in developing Intel's new core micro-architecture. He said greater performance with lower power consumption was one of the strongest market demands at present.

Seik pointed out that Fujitsu Siemens Computers had been involved in the development of Intel's Xeon processors from the beginning. "This enabled us to tune our Primergy S2 server generation to an optimum", he said.
