Intel, MS back HD DVD

Microsoft and Intel have come out in support of the HD DVD format, reports Wired News.com.

HD DVD is pitted against the Blu-Ray disc format to be the standard for next-generation DVDs.

The HD-DVD Promotion Group includes Toshiba and Universal Studios.

The move means PCs running Microsoft`s upcoming Windows Vista operating system or Intel`s Viiv entertainment technology will come with support for HD DVD drives. Toshiba has also announced it will launch a PC able to read HD DVD disks next year, according to Reuters.

In the other camp, the Blu-Ray format is backed by Sony, Apple, HP and Dell, among others.

MS moves further into storage market

Microsoft has moved a step further into the data storage market, reports CNet News. The company has shipped its Systems Centre Data Protection Manager software, which allows companies to backup corporate data from file servers to disk-based storage servers.

Disk-based backup is considered an attractive addition to standard data backup procedures, which often involve copying data onto tape.

"The move away from tape as a primary means of restoring data, and using tape for archiving purposes, we think is going to become very broad in the industry," says Bob Muglia, senior VP of Microsoft`s Windows Server division and the executive in charge of the company`s storage strategy.

Star Wars coming to a phone near you

Video game publisher THQ will work with Lucasfilm to develop a Star Wars game for mobile phones, reports Reuters.

THQ , a THQ unit, said it would develop Star Wars Battlefront Mobile, with sales expected to launch on 1 November exclusively on Cingular`s cellular service.

Cingular is a joint venture of BellSouth and SBC Communications.

The game is being developed in conjunction with Singapore`s Mikoishi, a game production and services company that specialises in the development and operation of multiplayer games for mobile phones.
