Intel releases 10Gb Ethernet Server Adapter

Johannesburg, 05 Jun 2003

Intel has announced the release of the industry`s first 10Gb Ethernet Server Adapter - the Intel PRO/10GbE LR.

The Gigabit Ethernet adapter is being distributed locally by Rectron.

Significantly, the Intel PRO/10GbE LR offers support for the recently ratified IEEE 802ae - a standard which extends single-mode fibre distances to 10km, at 10Gbps line speeds.

It also delivers enhanced performance to bandwidth-intensive applications by utilising an integrated PCI-X Intel 82597EX 133MHz/64-bit 10GbE controller.

"High-speed server connectivity is traditionally reserved for costly proprietary offerings such as high-performance computing clusters and grid-based computing, however, the Intel adapter can deliver this while countering unnecessary expenditure," says Douglas Downing, Intel business manager: servers, desktops and networking at local distributor Rectron.

"By utilising the 10Gb Ethernet Server Adapter, South African companies can cost-effectively expand campus-wide connectivity and take control of their corporate networks with privately owned fibre that eliminates costly leased-lines."

Concludes Downing: "With the Intel PRO/10GbE LR, organisations can improve the productivity of their networks by deploying a solution that is based on a key networking standard, therefore extending their reach and eliminating costs associated with proprietary offerings."
