For the second consecutive quarter, Intel Corporation has emerged as the leading provider of total 10/100 Megabit Ethernet network connections for the PC platform, according to a Dell Oro Group quarterly report.
Jaques van Schalkwyk, South African field sales applications engineer for the world`s leading technology provider, said the data also states that Intel took over the lead in market segment share for Gigabit Ethernet connections during the fourth quarter of 1998.
The Dell`Oro Group report shows Intel`s market segment share for Gigabit connections increased 14 percent over the third quarter, while its nearest competitor`s Gigabit connections fell 14 percent.
The second half of 1998 proved to be a period of record growth for Intel`s 10/100 connections business, including the sales of LAN on Motherboard (LOM), branded and OEM adapters, and controller components.
Van Schalkwyk attributes much of the growth in the second half to renewed strength of its reseller business, combined with design wins at the major PC OEMs, including Compaq, IBM, Dell and Gateway. Intel currently sells network connections to the top 10 PC OEMs.
"Our goal is to capitalise on Intel`s leading edge development capabilities to deliver robust, high-performance network connections that help our customers lower their support costs. With the recently announced 82559 family of Fast Ethernet adapters, Intel continues to innovate and deliver on the needs of this market segment," said Van Schalkwyk.
Dell`Oro Group`s report shows a significant positive increase for Intel - which gained momentum during the second half of 1998 - in overall 10/100 Megabit market segment share.
Intel`s total market segment share of 10/100 controllers in the second half of 1998 grew to 45 percent, up 18 percent over the first half of 1998, while the nearest competitor`s share of the 10/100 controller market segment dropped four percent during the same period, ending at 43 percent for the second half of 1998.
