Intel unveils six-core server chips
Intel has released six-core server chips under its Xeon product line and Core i7 for high-end desktop PCs, reports Reuters.
The microprocessors are the first of Intel's server chips featuring smaller transistors that have helped the company's laptop and desktop chips push stronger performance.
“The biggest opportunity rests with servers,” says Intel's GM of server marketing, Boyd Davis. “Where an estimated one-third of the market is running on chips made more than four years ago.”
AMD drives competition
Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has tried to take the limelight from Intel's newly released six-core processors by listing partner support for its eight- and 12-core processors set for release by the end of the month, states InformationWeek.
In addition, AMD's chips are expected to help companies run more software in fewer boxes through server virtualisation.
AMD and Intel are looking to grab a slice of what's expected to be a stronger corporate market than last year, which was ravaged by the economic recession.
