Opening an Internet channel has paid off for account payment service EasyPay, which is experiencing payment volume growth every month.
EasyPay, established in 1992, is a brand of Prism TranSwitch Services (Prism TSS), a subsidiary of JSE-listed Prism Holdings.
The Web site was launched in 1998 as the online extension of the brand`s physical presence in retailers including Pick 'n Pay, Shoprite Checkers and others.
It allows users to pay more than 130 different consumer accounts such as municipal accounts, Telkom, Eskom, SABC and traffic fines, as well as buy prepaid electricity.
Prism TSS MD Mike Smith says the site experiences average payment volume growth of 8% every month, with some users paying up to five individual accounts in one visit.
Smith says while Internet users make use of official banking Web sites to transact because of their established credibility and convenience, the EasyPay site is fast emerging as a popular alternative for online account payments as it does not charge transaction fees.
"EasyPay does not expect to convert established users to our Web site," he says. "However, with online transaction fees increasing, the fact that we do not charge transaction fees may see a migration in the future."
Smith says future plans include extending the site`s vending capabilities to accommodate the sale of prepaid airtime.
