Internet outage spreads to India

A massive Internet outage triggered by breaks in cables under the Mediterranean Sea disrupted online access for users in the Middle East and South Asia, reports USA Today.

But the disrupted service, which forced Internet service providers to reroute traffic, had no discernible impact in the US and Europe, says Dan Berkowitz, a spokesman for Keynote Systems, which monitors Internet and mobile performance.

IBM's business operations worldwide were not affected. The technology giant has multiple backup systems that can withstand anything from a cable break to earthquakes and inclement weather, said company spokesman Jim Larkin.

Intel sells MacBook air chip

The highly miniaturised version of the Core 2 Duo made by Intel specifically for the MacBook Air could end up spurring a raft of Windows-based competitors, says Information Week.

Other PC makers are reportedly looking to slim down their laptops like Apple did this month with its MacBook Air.

Intel has reportedly sold a version of the miniaturised Core 2 Duo processor in Apple's recently released MacBook Air to other manufactures, which could then build Windows-based competitors to the ultra-thin and light notebook.

Garmin adds cellphone

First Apple came out with the iPhone, then Google announced its mobile phone software development platform, and now GPS maker Garmin is entering the mobile phone market with a hybrid device called the nuvifone, reports Information Week.

The nuvifone is the first mobile phone by Garmin, featuring GPS, a touch-screen, and a Web browser.

Unveiled this week, the device combines a cellphone, Web browser and GPS. Its slim form factor, 3.5-inch touch-screen and on-screen keypad resemble another device that took the mobile market by storm last year: the iPhone.
