The Internet community is gearing up for the fourth annual Internet Week (iWeek) conference to take place from 14 to 16 September in Houghton, Johannesburg.
Co-hosted by the Internet Service Providers` Association of SA (ISPA) and UniForum SA, the event is free and will focus on issues such as the ICT charter, broadband, Internet development, spam, legislation and voice over IP (VOIP).
"The pace of change in the Internet space since last year`s iWeek conference has been remarkable," says Masedi Molosiwa, joint-chairman of ISPA. "For example, government took tangible steps towards deregulating the telecoms industry and VOIP is now legal. It`s time to take stock of these developments and plan a way forward so we can protect our interests and grow the industry."
The iWeek conference will feature speakers like Mthobeli Tengimfene, chief director of Internet access and software development at the Department of Communications; Dr Willie Black, founder of Nominet UK, the national registry for domain names ending with .uk; Rudolph Muller from the Department of Business Information Technology, University of Johannesburg and founder of MyADSL; and Tebogo Khaas, president of the SMME Forum.
The "Super Teacher of the Year" awards will also take place at iWeek. The awards recognise teachers that have participated in ISPA`s "Train the Teachers" project and successfully imparted their newly-acquired knowledge to their local communities.
The conference will also play host to the members-only ISPA annual general meeting on the last day.
