Internet Solutions maintains availability with APC

Johannesburg, 03 Aug 2009

Internet Solutions (IS) has kept its hosting centre continuously up and running for more than eight months, thanks to its installation of APC by Schneider Electric uninterruptible power supplies (UPSes).

According to Thomas Rademeyer, business solutions manager at Dimension Data Advanced Infrastructure, the company was asked to provide IS with a sound electrical solution for its hosting centre, which included electrical switchboards, generators, UPSes, fire suppression and air conditioning.

"We needed to build a hosting centre that complied with a Tier 3 topology, utilising some of the best of brand products available, while remaining cost-effective," he explains.

"IS uses its centre to host critical IT data for a number of large, enterprise sized clients in South Africa," says Rennie Naidoo, server operations manager at IS. "The system operates on a 24x7x365 basis meaning that maintaining constant availability is critical, particularly as an unplanned shutdown could lead to the loss of data or hardware failures, either of which could be catastrophic for IS.

"Based on these needs, Dimension Data Advanced Infrastructure installed six Galaxy 5000 and four Galaxy 6000 UPSes and sine wave units, a brand name specifically requested by IS.

"The fact that IS has not experienced a single incident or loss of power in the history of the units being deployed is a major differentiator between APC`s solutions and other competitive products. As Dimension Data Advanced Infrastructure, we also received the utmost commitment and best possible service from APC," Rademeyer adds.

Says Rodney Callaghan, MD: Southern Africa at APC by Schneider Electric: "The MGE Galaxy UPS is a truly scalable architecture that allows a business to grow the solution as its power requirements change. This model`s popularity is based on its outstanding reliability and track record as well as its modular design, permitting the paralleling of modules for capacity or redundancy without extra paralleling gear.

"This unit`s generator-friendly topology assists in avoiding excessive generator over-sizing requirements, while other notable features include a user friendly operator interface, high energy efficiency and an advanced battery management system with automated self-testing."
