Jacques Theron, with Internet Solutions (IS) as major sponsor, won his third consecutive Isuzu Berg River Canoe Marathon, despite a spectacular final stage charge from world marathon champ Hank McGregor. In a time of 15 hours 40 minutes 20 seconds, Theron beat McGregor by the narrow margin of one minute 30 seconds.
"I am really, really thrilled," said Theron. "It was an awesome race. Not only was it one of the most competitive races in many years, but the sportsmanship was outstanding. There is no doubt that the low water condition suited me, as both Hank McGregor and Graeme Solomon are heavier paddlers," he added.
"Paddling has become very competitive in SA," said Theron. "With the world marathon champion racing alongside top sprinters and ski paddlers, the standard overall has risen sharply," he said.
Theron has been sponsored by IS for just under a year and he says sponsorships are essential for him to compete at this level.
