InterSystems celebrates quarter century with rapid takeup in SA

Celebrating 25 years of doing business in the IT industry is no mean feat, especially for a company focused on one product - a database. InterSystems, developer of the world`s best-selling post-relational database, CACH'E, has done just that, marking a quarter century in business.

"More important than a mere 25 years of existence, InterSystems has delivered solid growth and profitability over those years," says Henry Adams, country manager of InterSystems SA. "Although it`s only been 18 months since InterSystems established a direct presence in SA, its growth trend is already visible here."

In all facets of the local market, InterSystems has made inroads relative to the traditional relational database vendors.

InterSystems has signed up 31 local partners: Nine are players in the healthcare arena; nine are in telecommunications; four in financial services and the balance operate in the retail and distribution markets. A total of more than 3 000 CACH'E seats have been deployed in the local market to date and 40% of these partners focus on the first tier and the balance on the traditional second tier of the market.

One of the reasons for InterSystems` success is the fact that it is a technology company focused on creating the best database in the market. "We do not compete with our partners by selling applications and services to end-users," Adams says. "We work with partners, helping them develop and market world-class applications based on CACH'E. We have such faith in CACH'E that we only profit from it when partners do - so it`s in our best interests to assist partners in creating great products and not to hinder them by developing our own competitive applications."

One of the biggest indicators of InterSystems` acceptance in the local market is that tier-one players, such as the larger systems integration houses, have started approaching the company for information and assistance on projects they are involved in.

Another indication of the company`s success in SA has been the emergence of a CACH'E user group, driven by InterSystems` partners and not by the vendor - as is usually the case in non-open-source technical user communities.

"Out partners are pivotal to our success," concludes Adams. "Our business model is designed specifically around going to market with them and making money with them. As such we`re always on the lookout for new blood, new ideas and innovations to take CACH'E into every market segment in every industry."
