Iona Technologies announces iPortal suite support for Windows 2000

Johannesburg, 26 May 2000

IONA Technologies, the Enterprise Portal company represented locally by CCH Software Development, has announced its support for Microsoft Windows 2000.

As part of its commitment to Microsoft`s technology, IONA plans to release a Windows 2000 version of the iPortal Suite during the second half of this year. The first iPortal Suite components to be released for Windows 2000 will be the iPortal Application Server and Orbix 2000.

The IONA iPortal Suite is the first multi-platform suite of products for building enterprise portals and other large-scale e-business applications. It includes: iPortal Server, which provides integration in the form of a portal access and control platform; iPortal Integration Server, a standards-based environment for leveraging and integrating large-scale enterprise applications; iPortal Application Server, an Enterprise JavaBean/Java 2 Enterprise Edition compliant container for component-based business logic; and Orbix 2000, a standards-based, common e-business infrastructure that provides the foundation for iPortal Suite.

As part of this announcement, IONA also renewed its broad commitment to Microsoft application development technologies and architectures. This includes commitment to COM+, the application services in Windows 2000 that form the cornerstone of Windows DNA, which is the application development model for the Windows 2000 platform. Orbix 2000 will provide the support in iPortal Suite for COM+. Orbix 2000, with its patent-pending Adaptive Runtime Technology, will feature COM+ interoperability later this year.

To help developers of enterprise portals build Web services and link heterogeneous components over the Internet, Orbix 2000 will also support Microsoft`s Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP). SOAP provides an open, extensible way for applications to communicate using XML-based messages over the Web regardless of what operating system, object model or language these applications may use. Orbix 2000`s modular architecture will make it easy for enterprise portal developers to add support for SOAP in their applications, through the use of an ART plug-in supporting SOAP.

"Windows 2000 is designed from the ground up to support scalable, high performance enterprise Internet applications," said Keith White, director or Windows Marketing for Microsoft Corporation. "iPortal Suite makes it easier for our customers to build, deploy and enterprise portals and other large distributed applications, furthering our goal of helping enterprise customers Internet-enable their businesses."
