iPad apps get VOIP functionality

communications firm, Twilio has released a developer kit that integrates voice over protocol (VOIP) into iPad and iPhone apps, Mobile Entertainment reports.

The 'Twilio Client for iOS' will enable any part of an app to become a 'VOIP phone', making calls via any iOS device over an Internet connection, whether the client is added to new or existing apps.

Twilio CEO and co-founder Jeff Lawson says in a Pad Gadget report that Twilio's mission is to “open the black box of telecom” and make its power accessible to developers everywhere.

“With Twilio Client for iOS, we're enabling mobile developers to incorporate VOIP directly into their apps to create rich communication experiences. We can't wait to see what they build,” adds Lawson.

Twilio Client for iOS is available for download at the company's site, and includes online presence features so users can detect when another user is available for a voice chat, Tab Times states.

Twilio says it also has an Android version of the SDK that's currently in a private beta testing phase.
