iPad makes waves in gaming

IT Pro Portal.

Speaking to IndustryGamers, John Riccitiello, CEO of gaming behemoth, EA said: “Consoles used to be 80% of the industry as recently as 2000. Consoles today are 40% of the game industry, so what do we really have? We have a new hardware platform and we're putting out software every 90 days. Our fastest growing platform is the iPad right now and that didn't exist 18 months ago.

“Consoles may offer better graphics for now, this advantage may not last forever. We have already suggested that future consoles like the Xbox 720 or the PS4 may actually share the same DNA as mobile phones”, he added.

However, as the iPad began to gain traction, game developers quickly began to report astonishing growth and support from customers, with one major developer noting its iPad debut as being “by far” the fastest selling and highest revenue generating game platform, writes Apple insider.

Apple's release of iPad 2 resulted in a major leap in performance for games, which Epic Games developer Tim Sweeney contrasted with conventional game consoles, describing “a 10-20 times leap in performance every seven to eight years” for consoles, compared to the 9x leap Apple claimed for the iPad 2 in just one annual refresh.

According to International Business Times, the original iPad managed 8.7 million triangles per second in the textured triangle test while iPad 2 managed 29 million triangles per second. And on the fragment lit test the PowerVR SGX 535 in the A4 could barely break four million triangles per second while the PowerVR SGX 543MP2 in the A5 managed just under 20 million.

The reach that tablets and smartphones currently offer is much higher than consoles, with possibilities of hitting higher sales volume which is higher for game makers on mobile or tablet space than consoles.
