iPad SIM card released

Etisalat has released a SIM card for the latest version of the Apple iPad, says Gulf News.

The device will allow users to connect the iPad to the Internet using a 3G connection. Customers can purchase the card for use or replace an existing card for Dh25 (R50), which can be done at the Etisalat business centre.

Khalifa Al Shamsi, senior VP of marketing for Etisalat, says the telecom service provider had been planning the card's release for some time and was counting on the device's popularity to drive sales of the new SIM card.

Ford smartphone apps due

The 2011 Ford Fiesta will be the first equipped with Ford's Sync system to control select Android and BlackBerry smartphone applications, reports Consumer Electronic Net.

In 2011, smartphone applications control will be available on all new Sync-equipped vehicles, and apps for the iPhone and other smartphones will become available that year as well, Ford says.

Through the Fiesta's Sync system, drivers will be able to use voice commands or the Fiesta's control switches to control Sync-enabled apps residing on Bluetooth-connected smartphones.

Microsoft, HP dump tablets

Microsoft has cancelled its Courier project and Hewlett-Packard plans to rework its much anticipated HP Slate to run Web OS rather than Windows 7, states Rethink Wireless.

If HP really is abandoning Windows for the Palm operating system, which it will own once it concludes its acquisition of Palm, it will make some sense of its decision to make that purchase.

The market for the hybrid device formats that live between notebooks and smartphones is still very new, and all the phone, PC and software players aim to stamp their mark at an early stage.
