IS pumps R153m into e-commerce infrastructure

Johannesburg, 25 Jun 1999

The Internet Solution (IS) is establishing South Africa`s premier e-commerce network. IS Infrastructure has just secured the first full 45Mbps international Internet circuit in the country for delivery during July 1999.

According to Dimension Data executive director, Alon Apteker, the move takes IS` current international bandwidth from 26 Mbps to over 60 Mbps and makes it by far the largest local provider of international Internet bandwidth. "It also forms part of a broader investment process in a substantial amount of not only bandwidth, but also hosting, switching and messaging, and other forms of e-commerce enablement infrastructure."

According to IS Infrastructure MD, Derek Wilcocks: "The bandwidth will greatly enhance the viability of on-line e-commerce ventures for both existing and potential IS customers. IS is currently investing heavily in building a robust and scalable infrastructure as a platform to drive and enable electronic business in South Africa. This latest deal with Telkom and AT&T follows on multi-million rand deals with Dell, SUN, and Cisco resulting in a complete rearchitecture of IS` server and network infrastructure. This investment has resulted in a twenty-fold improvement in IS` server capacity and created a completely redundant environment catering for mission-critical electronic business initiatives."

Wilcocks adds that this will reinforce IS` ability to deliver around value-added infrastructure services. IS is already the pre-eminent hosting company in South Africa and this additional bandwidth will enable IS to further entrench its position as the primary hub for electronic business in South Africa. Access to this hub via IS` managed Virtual Private Extranet and Intranet Services will be further enhanced through this investment.

"In the past, bandwidth and reliability may have been a concern to customers who expected really huge amounts of traffic at their Web sites. This implementation means IS is in a position to easily provide them with as much as they will need, and then some," Wilcocks says.

Apteker concluded by stating that it is IS` intention to increase bandwidth again within the next six months taking IS to a full 90 Mbps of international bandwidth - this is more than the total amount of Internet bandwidth currently available in South Africa.
