Is video streaming key to unlocking your content's value?

New multimedia streaming hosting service launched by South African firm for organisations keen to derive maximum value from their training or events
Johannesburg, 24 Aug 2006

South African multimedia streaming specialist, Knowledge doc, has launched a multimedia streaming hosting service (SHS) as part of its comprehensive suite of audio/video capture and streaming solutions.

Available immediately from the Midrand-based company, the SHS service is designed to save organisations multimedia investment costs without compromising performance.

"By hosting their streaming content with us, they can greatly reduce their multimedia investment costs such as hardware, software and technical expertise," clarifies Salim Latib, Director of Knowledge doc.

"They can also rest assured that their audience will enjoy an uninterrupted, high-quality viewing experience through our high-speed, fully redundant service."

By outsourcing their multimedia streaming, organisations are free to concentrate on their primary business and not on the details of managing the expensive, complex infrastructure required. "It's also a better use of their existing bandwidth," explains Latib, "which might otherwise get clogged up during spikes or peaks in demand."

Knowledge doc has been offering 'rapid knowledge dissemination' services for over two years now. Based and supported by the recently merged business and technology incubator, SoftstartBTI, the company has benefited from the incubator's state-of-the-art facilities and extensive network.

"The incubator has proved the ideal environment for us," confirms Latib. "Its cutting-edge technological infrastructure and connectivity helps us consistently deliver and the environment breeds enthusiasm and success."

Commenting on what makes Knowledge doc unique, Latib emphasises how its services enable companies to derive new and additional value from their information. "Our basic premise is that we help businesses make their information work for them," maintains Latib. "We do this by packaging their information so that it can be sold, exchanged and distributed more widely and more conveniently. This, of course, means we can help them derive new value from existing information as well."

Latib cites training as one area where multimedia streaming is having a particularly huge impact. "It is starting to radically change the way organisations offer training opportunities to employees, customers, partners and students," confirms Latib. "We can record an event like a training session with fully integrated video and presentation material and deliver it as a real-time 'live' broadcast as well as making it available for replay at a later date. This means that the training session or conference is not restricted to the small group attending it, but can be accessed by people across the country and around the world as and when required."

He uses the public lecture given by the Director-General in The Presidency, Reverend Frank Chikane, at the Wits Graduate School of Public and Development Management (P&DM) earlier this year as an example. "We recorded the lecture and have since made it available from their Web site so all the students can see it," he confirms.

Latib points out that Knowledge doc is also able to convert audio and video content into a variety of formats, including CD-ROM and DVD for offline delivery. "We also offer a full transcription and session reporting service," he discloses.

While organisations quickly get excited about the advantages of multimedia streaming once they grasp the concept and understand the possibilities, Latib admits that a large part of Knowledge doc's task is to educate the market.

"Since we are one of the few South African companies capable of delivering multimedia streaming, very little is know about it," he corroborates. "That is also partly why we are more than happy to organise free demonstrations for companies."

Knowledge doc will record and stream any short seminar or event of up to three hours duration for up to 72 hours free of charge. Companies interested in organising a no-obligation trial of what multimedia streaming can do for them should contact Salim Latib on (086) 111 3477 or e-mail salim@knowledgedoc.co.za.

Recognised as an innovative South African ICT company, Knowledge doc qualified for incubation at SoftstartBTI immediately. "The company is offering cutting-edge technology and pioneering services of a world-class standard to the South African business community. That's quite something and we are proud to be assisting Salim and his team."
