ISDN gateway security appliance now a fast, simple reality

By Kevin Archer, ,
Johannesburg, 29 Nov 2002

"Fast and simple; ISDN security is now a reality," commented Kevin Archer, CEO of SecureWorx. "Connecting your private system to any other network opens a myriad of vulnerabilities in one instant. Although a company that is using ISDN dialup to access the Internet may feel it is not connected for a long enough period to attract would-be hackers, it has been shown that on average unwanted visitors probe a company, that is permanently connected to the Internet, eight times a day. So the chances of this happening during a dial-up session are very good.

"The ISDN Basilisk F100 device not only provides ICSA certified security but also a convenient method for connecting to the Internet or any other ISDN network," said Archer. "By simply connecting the local area network to the Internal Interface of the device and connecting the telco ISDN line to the built-in ISDN TA, mounted inside the Basilisk, one is able to provide a secure, dial-on-demand or timed access Internet or remote network access system."

The new capability is based on the trusted and proven Basilisk Ethernet technology. SecureWorx has extended this gateway security appliance, virtual private network and traffic-shaping functionality to operate seamlessly over an ISDN dial-up connection.

For a corporation whose branch offices are scattered all over the world, an ISDN F100 Basilisk may be used at the branch to connect to its local Internet point-of-presence. Once an Internet connection has been established, a Basilisk VPN connection may be used between the ISDN Basilisk and head office to allow totally secure remote access to private networks using the IPSec platform. The added benefit of the Basilisk device handling the connection is that the connection negotiation to the system users happens seamlessly. If a resource is needed that is on the other side of the ISDN link the Basilisk dials, connects, authenticates and manages the connections without any noticeable delays.

If an individual has an ISDN Internet account, these account details may be entered into the Basilisk, which will on a dial-on-demand or timed access basis negotiate the ISP connection. When a workstation on the protected side of the Basilisk requests an Internet resource the connection is immediately established and secured by the Basilisk Firewall. This traffic-shaping feature allows the user to allocate bandwidth on a 'per protocol' and 'IP address' basis, which ensures that the valuable bandwidth is not wasted on services that are not business-critical. If the bandwidth demand grows beyond the usual 64Kbps the Basilisk will automatically activate the second 64Kbps line and instantaneously double the throughput, assuming that the ISP supports the feature.

ISDN line usage and traffic activity is reported in detail to avoid misuse or inefficiency.

SecureWorx is a South African-based company focused on the development and provision of security solutions. SecureWorx is constantly developing and enhancing its world-renowned ICSA certified firewalling technology, wireless firewalling, high throughput and VPN solutions for small to corporate customers. SecureWorx prides itself in implementing and delivering these products on time and to true embedded appliance specifications. In December 2001, the Basilisk Internet Security Appliances were awarded the internationally accepted International Computer Security Association (ICSA) Firewall certification (ICSA labs is an independent division of US-based TruSecure Corporation). This firewall certification provides customers with the assurance that the product meets a broad published standard and level of security. It also ensures that security products comply with the global industry's highest standards. Currently, ICSA labs certify 95% of the market's leading anti-virus software, firewalls, cryptography, e-mail scanning and IPSec products. SecureWorx is one of the few companies worldwide and the only South African company to have achieved this international recognition. As such, the Basilisk product range joins those from leading Nasdaq vendors such as Check Point Software Technologies, Cisco Systems, Lucent Technologies, Nokia, NetScreen and SonicWALL who similarly have been awarded this prestigious certification.
