The ICT Sector Education Training Authority wants more funding to expand skills training into rural areas.
The Information Systems, Electronics and Telecommunication Technologies Sector Education and Training Authority (Isett Seta) says it has, so far, trained 8 000 unemployed youth in rural areas.
CEO Oupa Mopaki says the youngsters were trained in end-user computing, which is seen as a key administration and life-skills qualification. He says these skills are critical to reduce computing illiteracy in SA.
The authority wants to obtain more funding from the National Skills Fund to make skills development opportunities available to youth in the underprivileged areas across the country, Mopaki says.
Setas are being relocated from the Department of Labour to fall under the auspices of the Department of Higher Education. It is also expected that the number of Setas will be trimmed from 23 to 12.
Mopaki says this move has not yet happened. An extension has been granted to all Setas up to the end of March, he says. Despite the pending move, he says the Isett Seta plans to continue with its multifaceted approach to skills development in the ICT sector.
