Professional services firm KPMG has announced that it, together with Telkom, will sponsor the third Information Security South Africa (ISSA) 2003 annual conference being held under the auspices of the RAU Standard Bank Academy for Information Technology and the University of Pretoria Department of Computer Science. The ISSA2003 conference will run from 9 to 11 July 2003 at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg, Gauteng.
This conference originally developed to afford local players in information security the opportunity to attend an international conference in their own country, encourage international players to share their knowledge, while at the same time receive exposure to local thinking.
In its short lifespan, this conference has certainly become a recognised opportunity for professionals from industry, as well as researchers, to access a platform to share their knowledge, experience and research results in the field of information security. The two higher education institutions involved have taken up the challenge to grow the conference each year in terms of delegate numbers, international participants and overall quality.
For many delegates this will also be an opportunity to "test the waters" regarding new ideas and concepts before submitting them for international scrutiny. The conference is also a great opportunity for researchers who might be new to the information security field, to gain some valuable experience in writing articles, developing presentations and presenting their results. People from industry will be able to use this as an opportunity to find out what the latest developments are and to network with peers.
This year`s conference has defined the following key areas as some of the objectives:
* To promote best practice in information security and its application in southern Africa.
* To facilitate the meeting of diverse cultures in sharing and learning from each other in the quest for safer information systems.
* To provide a forum for education, knowledge transfer and the development of new skills and professional development.
* To encourage the study of information security.
A number of topical issues will be explored at the conference in presentations by an excellent array of subject specialists. Among the guest speakers will be Rick Cudworth, KPMG Engagement Partner, United Kingdom.
Cudworth has over 20 years experience in leading projects. As the international service leader for Europe, the Middle East and Africa, he is responsible with his corresponding colleagues in the Americas and Asia Pacific regions, for defining and driving KPMG`s approach to services in business continuity and information security.
The aim of his presentation "Investing in Business Continuity Management (BCM)" is to focus upon the rationale for investment in BCM. It will include an appreciation of the drivers for BCM, the investment required and the need to embed business continuity management within the culture of organisations.
Other guest speakers include Prof Stephanie Teufel of Fribourg University, Switzerland; Dr Hettie Booysen of Telkom, South Africa; and Rich Schiesser of Harris Kern Enterprise Computing Institute, USA.
