To streamline information management across its five operating companies, electronic and software technology group IST Group Limited has implemented the Altris eB Configuration Management system from Spescom DataFusion (Pty) Limited.
Spescom DataFusion supplies and supports the award-winning eB suite of knowledge management products through Spescom Limited's acquisition of a controlling interest in US-based Altris Software Inc.
Wally Haywood, group quality manager: IST, says the group applies its technologies across the telecommunications, energy, industrial and defence sectors, and required a tool that could enhance its existing information management system.
"Spescom DataFusion's eB Configuration Management solution allows our data to be modelled with multi-dimensional relationships to other information, physical items, people, processes, services and systems."
To date, says Haywood, the system has been implemented as a phase one proof-of-concept project, while users have been trained to apply the solution to gain efficient control over IST's business information.
Together with a team from IST, Spescom is also in the process of scoping the migration of IST's legacy data to the system.
"A large variety of information exists in different databases across the IST group, which makes it extremely difficult for users to extract, share and distribute critical business information in an efficient manner," Haywood explains.
The eB configuration management suite will shortly be rolled out to as many user desktops as possible, while the system's entire database, shared across the group's autonomously functioning companies, will be available in an easily accessible web format.
Haywood says an improved data management system means that one of IST's most important requirements - the professional capturing of information - is met.
Siegmund Zerwick, Altris business unit manager: Spescom, says a further point of engagement with IST will be the integration of the eB package with Great Plains, IST's Microsoft Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) solution.
