IT audits key to successful projects

Johannesburg, 14 Oct 2010

Investing in an audit of a company`s IT environment, infrastructure and development practices before embarking on expensive software implementations, will save both time and money in the long run. But according to Airborne Consulting co-founder Brian Harding, Airborne is frequently called in to rescue project disasters where due diligence and best practice have clearly not been followed.

He says: "In these instances, in-house IT departments have often been allowed to spend valuable company time and money pursuing technical agendas, under the banner of software development or some other noble pursuit."

Technology evolves rapidly, and while it can certainly be beneficial to keep up, the adoption of a new technology or methodology is a complex undertaking, and all potential pitfalls and challenges must be clearly understood and tackled correctly. Very often, enthusiastic IT departments embark on a project without the relevant skill and experience. Training courses are one thing, but real life experiences with the scars to prove it are quite another.

Says Harding: "How many C-Execs are out there who simply do not understand why they are spending so much on IT without seeing the reward? They can`t get close to the action because it is shrouded in mysterious technology. A tremendous amount of time and money can be saved by calling in the specialists at the beginning and plotting a path and process that is attainable and sustainable."
