IT convergence impacts CIO roles
OT is defined as equipment-oriented technology that is developed, implemented and supported separately from the IT department, says Computing.co.uk.
The analyst firm adds that CIOs' roles could change from IT delivery to exploiting business assets such as processes and information across all technologies across the enterprise.
Kristian Steenstrup, research VP and Gartner fellow, explains that many sectors are starting to see widespread convergence between OT and IT.
He says OT has changed, "so that the underlying technology such as platforms, software, security and communications is becoming more like IT systems".
Steenstrup adds this trend gives a strong justification for IT groups to contribute to OT software management. “This creates an IT and OT alignment that could be in the form of standards, enterprise architecture support, security models and information and process integration.”
India Info Online says the convergence of IT and OT results in optimised business processes, reduced costs, lower risks and shortened project timelines, according to Gartner.
