ICT solution provider T-Systems South Africa has donated R1 million to Children in Crisis, a project that offers psychological help to traumatised children.
The project, initiated in 1998 by Dr Hubertus Adam, is part of Steffi Graf`s charity foundation - Children for Tomorrow. It operates primarily in Langa, Cape Town, and is run by Umesh Bawa, a clinical psychologist at the University of the Western Cape.
The counselling takes place at the Department of Psychology, the Institute for Counselling at the University of the Western Cape and the Adolescent Psychiatry unit at Tygerberg Hospital.
"T-Systems is committed to participating in and helping resolve the problems that are faced in SA. The effects of poverty and crime are far-reaching and the impact these factors can have on affected children is enormous," says Mardia van der Walt-Korsten, deputy CEO of T-Systems.
The therapeutic services offered by the organisation include curative services for hospitals and day clinics and preventative services in township schools and disadvantaged communities.
T-Systems has also contributed 23 PCs and ICT infrastructure to various disadvantaged schools and community programmes identified by Children in Crisis.
"One of the proactive measures that the project is using to help children recover from their traumatic experiences is participating in school rehabilitation programmes. Among the initiatives under consideration is the creation of a sustainable soccer development initiative, alongside Santos Football Club for children in the Langa area," says Dr Hubertus Adam, medical director of Children for Tomorrow.
"A once-off donation is not sufficient to provide real benefit to the children. More important than the size of the initiative is its sustainability and as such, the initiative must be designed and implemented with the support and participation of the community," says Dr Michael Heuser, T-Systems` international spokesman.
