IT governance capabilities in doubt

Four out of five IT professionals believe there is room for improvement in their IT structures.

This is according to an international IT governance survey undertaken by KMPG last year. More than half the respondents said their IT governance initiatives are not integrated into their companies` corporate governance structures.

In addition, many have informal initiatives in place that do not meet current requirements, and even the more heavily regulated industries have yet to develop and implement anything other than basic IT governance frameworks.

The findings underline the need for salient information and practical assistance with IT government initiatives at most companies, says Johan Botha, founder member and MD of performance management consultancy Analytix.

"IT governance is part of every IT manager and every board member`s responsibility these days. There is a strong need to protect business information and the risks of IT," states Botha, one of the keynote speakers at a two-day IT governance conference to be held in Johannesburg in June.

The event, hosted by ITWeb in association with Analytix and Unisys, addresses IT governance from a range of perspectives. It will feature three international presentations and a selection of local speakers, most of whom will use case studies to demonstrate how best to approach the development, implementation, management and measurement of IT governance initiatives in various industry sectors.

"We are now entering the stage where people are either already doing something about IT governance, or seriously contemplating getting involved in the process of doing so. This conference will give all delegates the knowledge and ability to go back to their workplaces and strengthen their IT governance initiatives," says Botha.

The findings of the KPMG international research will be discussed in detail at the conference, giving delegates a global view of IT governance implementations. Botha will release the results of a local IT governance survey, aimed at establishing the state of play in SA, at the conference.
