The second annual ITWeb Technology Golf Challenge raised almost R83 000 for charity.

The event, sponsored by Softline, took place yesterday at the Pecanwood Golf and Country Club at Hartebeespoort Dam.

After the success of last year`s event at Dainfern Country Golf Club, which raised R53 000 for the Ethembeni AIDS Orphanage, this year`s event attracted overwhelming industry support, with participants including key players from dozens of companies in the ICT industry.

More than 120 participants enjoyed 18 holes in aid of Kids` Haven. The day`s golf and fund-raising event at the end of the evening raised almost R83 000 for the Benoni shelter for homeless and abused children.

This includes R40 000 from golf day sponsorships and player contributions, as well as R42 500 from an auction sponsored by CorpIT, a lucky draw sponsored by Lexmark, and a "closest to the pin challenge" sponsored by Softline. The items auctioned included memorabilia from Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus, Vijay Singh and Ernie Els.

The biggest money-spinner was a framed Ernie Els golf ball with photo and plaque, which raised a top bid of R20 000 from Hans Horn, MD of Lexmark.

David Barnard, ITWeb sales manager and member of the winning four-ball team, says: "A very high level of important individuals in the ICT industry attended, which ensured great exposure to sponsors and provided excellent opportunities for all participants."

Barnard`s winning four-ball team members included Bheki Nkomo, MD of UUNet, Striata MD Mike Wright and ITWeb`s Ernie Hipner. The prize was donated by Softline Enterprise.

"We seldom have an opportunity to see that many happy IT professionals in one place enjoying the game, the company, themselves and a worthy cause. There is nothing more rewarding than the sense of meaningful contribution," says ITWeb CEO Jovan Regasek.
