Consultica Management, a newly-formed South African company, has won sole distribution rights to US-patented Theftstop technology.

Consultica will distribute Theftstop metal identification plates to consumers and technology channel outlets.

The plates are attached to any device, from laptops to i-Pods, and leave an indelible ink "tattoo" on the hardware, even if the plate is removed or filed down.

Business development manager at Consultica, Dala de Abreu, says the plates adhere to any material and can resist a 400kg pull force.

Web tracking

De Abreu adds the plates can be combined with Web Track - installed on the user`s device.

"Web Track creates a 'fingerprint` on a laptop, for instance. Once it connects to the Internet, it will be tracked by one of the seven Theftstop servers around the world."

Consultica is meeting with various insurance companies, the local police, border control units, large second hand dealers and channel outlets to promote the product.

Air France, Barclays, Canon, Ford, Gillette, Orange, IBM and KPMG are among the companies utilising Theftstop security measures, Consultica claims.

"We hope the technology has the same impact locally it has had in other countries, where it has significantly reduced laptop theft," De Abreu concludes.
