The International Telecommunications Union (ITU) has approved a standard for short optical interfaces designed to push intra-office bandwidth up to 40Gbps.
The new standard, dubbed ITU-T G.693, will allow vendors to build inter-operable optical interfaces to fulfil the need of connecting devices that demand ever-increasing bandwidth, from 2Gbps to 40Gbps, over distances between 600m and 2km.
Apart from higher bandwidth, optical networking also offers the advantage of bringing down costs, improving connection flexibility, and alleviating packets lost due to errors on the transmission.
"This standard addresses the urgent need for low cost, high speed optical links to interconnect co-located equipment such as routers, Dense Wavelength Division Multiplex terminals and Synchronous Digital Hierarchy add-drop multiplexers," says Peter Wery, chairman of ITU-T Study Group 15.
The standard has been passed by ITU`s Study Group 15, and is now awaiting comment from the industry. If feedback is positive, the standard will receive its final stamp of approval by the end of the year.
