The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has introduced a global application challenge, to encourage developers around the world to create innovative IPTV apps running over ITU standards.
Selected participants will be given the opportunity to showcase their creative work and expand business opportunities at the ITU Telecom World 2011 event, in Switzerland in October. The event will be attended by the who's who of the ICT world, it says.
According to the organisation, applicants are encouraged to think creatively about the IPTV platform and the opportunities it offers. “The best app submitted by an individual or SME will win $10 000.”
There is a separate category for corporate entries, where the best application submitted by an organisation - profit, non-profit, or academic - with 50 or more employees, or a public sector organisation regardless of its size, is awarded.
“The winners will receive their awards at the ITU Telecom World 2011 show in Geneva in October,” the ITU says.
The ITU encourages entrants to be as creative as they like. “Potential areas of focus could include: linear (channel service) broadcast TV, electronic programme guide and video on-demand games. This can also include e-government, e-publishing, e-commerce, e-learning and e-health services.”
Those wishing to enter the competition must register by 16 September, and entries must be submitted between 1 August and 23 September.
Full details, including technical descriptions of the applicable ITU standards, are available at www.itu.int/challenges/iptv.
