A shortlist of four finalists has been selected for this year's ITWeb BI Excellence and BI Innovation awards.

The winners will be named at ITWeb's two-day Business Intelligence Summit at Vodaworld from 22 to 23 February.

The finalists are as follows:

* BSi Steel, for its BI solution rolled out in partnership with ISPartners to provide management with a real-time, accurate view of its stockholding.

* Credit Guarantee Insurance Corporation of Africa Limited (CGIC), the largest credit insurer in Africa, for its new data warehousing and BI solutions rolled out in partnership with Alicornio Africa.

* Murray & Roberts Steel, for an internal BI project that allows it to manage stock in line with trends, allowing it to react quickly to changes in the construction industry, among other advantages.

* The South African Revenue Service (SARS) for its new enterprise data warehouse with business intelligence (BI) capabilities to support integrated and fact-driven decision-making.

Each finalist was selected from a field of strong entries, which was improved in quality and number of submissions over last year, said head judge Bill Hoggarth, head of BI at CQS Technology Holdings.

The finalists will be assessed by judges Bill Hoggarth, Davide Hanan, MD of QlikView SA, Estelle de Beer, BI Practice manager at Sybase SA, and Barry Devlin, founder and principal of 9sight Consulting.

The judges will give delegates at the ITWeb Business Intelligence Summit 2011 an overview of the projects and discuss their impressions of the project, ahead of the winners being named.
