The third annual ITWeb technology golf day, sponsored by Softline and held yesterday at the Johannesburg Country Club in Woodmead, attracted almost 140 players from local businesses, and raised R108 000 for the Kids Haven children`s centre.
The Telepassport fourball of Shaun Groves, Suren Kasil, Dewald Badenhorst and Demist Mogafe came in clear winners with a combined stableford points score of 96, winning themselves a BMW advanced driving course each, sponsored by Softline.
Second, with 91 points, was the Lechabile fourball of Winston Mosiako, Zainul Nagdee, Andrew Lutwama and Lesley Mampe. Third, with 86, was Lexmark`s Hans Horn, Mmutle Lentle, Selo Rasethaba and Khutso Mampeule.
The day`s best individual performance belonged to Alan Gibbons, scoring 40 points off his 13 handicap.
Celebrity guests
Former SA cricketers Pat Symcox and Fanie de Villiers entertained the participants at the evening function with a series of "fines" for those guilty of the most embarrassing golfing moments of the day.
Symcox related a story about De Villiers meeting England`s queen on a cricket tour to the UK, jibing him about his poor English at the time: "The whole team was just praying she wouldn`t stop at Fanie - and then when she did he called her 'your royal worshipness`".
When the queen asked him what had happened to the Springbok emblem that formerly appeared on their shirts, and had been replaced by a "stump and ball" icon, Fanie replied, simply: "It jumped!"
Kids Haven
Kids Haven in Benoni is a secure village for almost 200 former street children and an educational centre for about 50 children, which prepares them for formal school. The other 150 children are integrated into formal school, says fundraising coordinator for Kids Haven, Sue Daly.
"The funds raised from the golf day will go towards our education programmes and to pay school fees," she said.
Auctioning and sponsors
Helping raise money for the charity was Bromide`s Delfim Alves, who pledged a total of R24 000, with successful bids for a signed cricket bat (sponsored by ITWeb), from SA`s 1994 Australian tour and a flag from one of the Nedbank Million Dollar Championships, signed by famous professionals Retief Goosen, Ernie Els, Fulton Allen and David Frost.
Tim Finch, from Colour Corporate, walked away with signed photos of Jack Nicklaus` final round of golf at St Andrews in Scotland, for R8 000.
A Gary Player signed shirt and golf ball package went to Neil Michelson for R8 000, and two nights at the Arabella in the Cape was auctioned to Andrew Egan for R4 000.
Softline was the overall event sponsor, with DVT and Microsoft as gold sponsors, and eSecure, Intorstat, MWeb Business and Telepassport as silver sponsors.
eSecure pledged a further R10 000 on the day.
