ITWeb senior journalist Nicola Mawson was one of a handful of finalists at this year's Sanlam Awards for Excellence in Financial Journalism.
The awards were presented last night at a ceremony in Johannesburg. Mawson was a finalist in the economy and industry: dailies and online category, competing against journalists from mainstream financial publications. Jan de Lange, from Sake24, was the ultimate winner of the category.
Mawson entered a series of articles on JSE-listed Faritec, which covered the troubled company's bid to raise cash and eventual demise after it liquidated its largest entity, Faritec Enterprise Solutions, last year.
Last April, Mawson revealed the company was in talks to sell several assets without informing shareholders. The investigative article led to the company suspending trade in its shares the next day.
The annual Sanlam Awards were introduced in 1974 to acknowledge the role of financial journalism in society and promote the high standards required of financial journalists.
This year, the competition attracted 109 entries, one less than last year, from 70 journalists representing 25 different publications, online news services, and radio and television stations.
